The following individuals have committed to coach with Roanoke United Volleyball for the upcoming 2012 season. As more coaches commit to RUV and more Coach Bio info is received, this page will be updated accordingly. Initial coaching assignments are now posted on the Teams Page. Some coaches below will be head coaches, some will be assistant coaches, and some will assist multiple teams with position-specific training throughout the season. All coaches will be required to pass background checks administered by USAV Volleyball and the Old Dominion Region and also must complete the necessary coaching certification classes prior to the season. Randy Asbury has been an assistant coach at Roanoke College for the past nine seasons. He also served as an assistant coach at William Byrd High School for six seasons, including the Terriers state championship team in 2000. Randy has also coached various open-level club teams over the past 10+ years, including a team that qualified for nationals. With 30 years of coaching and playing experience under his belt, Randy brings a great deal of knowledge to all the teams he coaches.
Jessica Bayne has been playing volleyball in club, high school, and college for the past 8 years and played for Roanoke College in 2009 and 2010. She was the assistant coach for the NRV 14's club team last season and has served as a coach at several area volleyball camps as well. She loves the game of volleyball and hopes one day to coach at the high school level.
Jonathan Bayne has played volleyball for 15 years in both the RVVA, USAV, and doubles tournaments. He coached various age groups for NRV Juniors and Roanoke United over the past 6 seasons and also has experience coaching multiple youth sports teams in Salem for the past 7 years. Jon is also in his first year as an assistant coach at Roanoke College.
Jenna Burnop was an excellent middle hitter at Blacksburg High School and Roanoke College. She has coached at William Byrd HS and Cave Spring HS the past three seasons and was an assistant club coach in 2010.
Basil & Stephanie Conner have been involved with area volleyball for more than two decades. Basil has played doubles, triples, quads, and 6's for the last 24 years at RVVA and around the state. He also played USAV at various levels for 12 years. Basil & Stephanie served as assistant coaches at Salem HS for 12 years and at Roanoke College for two years. Basil & Stephanie currently serve as the coaches for Roanoke Valley Christianís middle school, JV, and Varsity teams where they have been coaching for 6 years. Basil also has 2 years of experience coaching club teams.
Amy Crawford is an elementary physical education specialist in Roanoke County. She has been a high school coach since 1999 and has been the head varsity volleyball coach at her alma mater - Northside HS - since 2004. During that time, Northside won the Blue Ridge District twice and went to the Final Four in 2007. Amy also served as a coach in the East/West Virginia All-Star Game that year. She has also been a club volleyball coach and club director for the past two seasons.
Heather Donaho played volleyball at North Cross and was a setter for the team that won a state championship in 1994. She then went to Roanoke College where she was a four-year starting setter from 1995-1999. After graduating from Roanoke College in 1999, Heather began coaching JV volleyball at North Cross. She is now in her fifth year as the varsity coach at North Cross and her team won back to back State Championships in 2009 and 2010. Heather was named VISAA Division III Coach of the Year and All-Timesland Coach of the Year in 2010 as well. Heather has coached various club teams for Roanoke Juniors over the past 3 seasons.
James Eaton started playing volleyball during his senior year at VCU and he has been playing ever since. In all, he has been playing in the RVVA, USAV, and in summer doubles tournaments for about 20 years now. On the coaching side, James was an assistant coach at Roanoke College for 7 years and also helped coach at Northside High School for 2 years. He has been coaching club volleyball teams in various age groups for 10+ years. James has also been a USAV referee for both juniors and adult volleyball. He has also officiated in the ODAC and often calls lines at Virginia Tech home matches.
Alan Griffith has been active as a player and coach in the local volleyball community for over 30 years. He has served as an assistant coach at Roanoke College and on various high school and club teams during that time. Alan is especially well known for his expertise in coaching middles at every level.
Rob Gum has been playing indoor and outdoor volleyball in our region for many years and is widely considered to be one of the best hitters/blockers in our area. Rob also has experience as an assistant high school coach and will be working with Roanoke United primarily as a position coach for hitters and blockers.
Jody Harden played college volleyball at Roanoke College and Ferrum College. She has coached JV volleyball at Roanoke Catholic and Salem High School the past three years and has also coached club volleyball in the 13's and 14's age group for the past three seasons.
Greg Hetherington has an impressive volleyball coaching resume' with over 15 years of coaching experience at various levels. Specifically, he has coached at the college level (student assistant coach at D-I Stetson University and head coach at NAIA Indiana University Southeast), the high school level (Ballard HS in KY, Providence Catholic HS in IN, and Northside HS in Roanoke), and the club level (various teams wherever he has lived since 1997, including RVC in Richmond).
Erika Hoffman has been playing volleyball for 17 years. She has enjoyed playing recreation ball through the Roanoke Valley Volleyball Association (RVVA) as well as doubles tournaments in the summer. She has been coaching club volleyball for the past three seasons and also coaches at Roanoke Catholic.
Randy Klostermann has been an assistant varsity coach at Hidden Valley High School for the past several years. He has also coached various club teams in the 14-18 age groups for the past 5 years with both Roanoke Juniors and NRV Juniors. Randy's daughter is currently playing for Roanoke College.
Caitlyn Long was a standout volleyball player at Cave Spring HS and at Roanoke College where she excelled as both a setter and a libero at different times during her playing career. She most recently served as the Head JV Coach at Cave Spring HS.
Deon Matthews has been playing club volleyball since 1991. He played beach doubles during his time in the Marine Corp from 1991-1997 and was a setter for the regional Marine Volleyball team in 1994 & 1995. More recently, Deon has played on various USAV teams and presently plays at RVVA. He also served as the head coach at Cave Spring Middle School in 2009 and 2010.

Dave McGee started playing volleyball in 1992 and has been playing and coaching ever since. He has been the head varsity coach at Bath County HS since 2004 and the Chargers have improved tremendously under his direction, going from their first-ever winning season in 2004 to a state championship appearance in 2009. Along the way, they have won 4 district titles and 1 regional championship. Dave is CAP Level II certified and has also been the club director and a coach for the Virginia Highlands Volleyball Club since 2005.
Tim McSherry has been coaching at Faith Christian and Roanoke Catholic for the past 5 years. He also served as an assistant club coach at the 13's level last year.
Maggie Newman began playing volleyball in 1988. She has played USAV Women's, played rec ball at the RVVA, worked 2 years as a referee and has played in several outdoor doubles tournaments. She coached a Roanoke United 15 Club team in 2011 and has coached at the middle school and JV levels at Roanoke Catholic School. She is currently the head coach at Glenvar Middle School.
Scott Newton is currently the head varsity volleyball coach at Blacksburg High School. Looking back a few years, Scott started playing volleyball for Hermitage HS in Richmond when he was in the 8th grade and also played for various RVC Boys teams, including the National Team for 16s and 17s. While at Radford University, Scott founded the Radford University Men's Club Volleyball Team and took the team to the National Tournament in only the club's 3rd year. While attending and playing for Radford, Scott was also the Head JV Coach at Eastern Montgomery HS in 2007 and then became the Head Coach at Auburn MS for 2 years. In 2008 he was also the Student Assistant Coach for the Radford University Women's Team. Scotts club coaching experience includes his role as a founder and coach of River Valley Juniors in Blacksburg and he also coached the RVC Boys 15 National team that finished 13th at the USAV Open Junior National Championships.
Tom Patterson started coaching as a student assistant at East Tennessee State University. He has been an assistant coach for Plant HS - a 6A high school in Tampa, FL ñ and a head coach for St. John's Episcopal Middle School in Tampa. Tom has also coached various high-level club volleyball teams in the 13ís, 14ís and 18ís age groups for the past 6 years at both Tampa Bay Juniors and Tampa United Volleyball. He has taken multiple teams to national tournaments and is excited to bring that experience to Roanoke United Volleyball.
Maria Rushbrooke has been involved with volleyball since 1991. Maria has been a stand out athlete since high school and has been coaching, directing and developing sports programs since she was 16 years of age. Through doubles, USAV women’s and coed league 6’s, Maria has achieved many awards. She started coaching in 2006 with the Roanoke Juniors program. In 2008, she coached at Roanoke Catholic, where in 2010 they were the state runners-up. She was named the Blue Ridge Conference Coach of the year in 2010. Maria is CAP I certified. Maria places emphasis on team unity through play via team and individual skills.
Deirdre Stevens was a standout player at Lord Botetourt High School and then played 3 years of club volleyball at Virginia Tech after declining an invitation to walk-on at VT. Deirdre has been playing in outdoor doubles tournaments for many years and partnered with Tamalyn on a few tournament titles "back in the day." Deirdre has been coaching club volleyball for the past 4 seasons.
Jim Stevens has played 10+ years of indoor and outdoor volleyball. He has also coached junior varsity volleyball and has 4 years experience as a club volleyball coach both as a head coach and an assistant coach.
Mark Tanis has been an assistant coach at Cave Spring HS for the past 11 years and also assisted with various open-level club teams during that time. Mark served as the Treasurer for Roanoke Juniors during that time as well and serves as Co-Tournament Director of the Shamrock Festival with Tamalyn. Mark played 5 years of adult league volleyball at RVC in Richmond before moving back to Roanoke to marry Tamalyn in 1999.
Tamalyn Tanis was a standout volleyball player at Cave Spring HS and then was a four-year starting outside hitter at the University of Mary Washington. She coached JV at Cave Spring HS for eight years before taking over as the Head Varsity Coach at Cave Spring nine seasons ago. Since then, Tamalyn has lead Cave Spring to the State Final Four in six of her eight seasons, including five consecutive appearances in the State Finals, winning four state championships. She coached various open-level club teams for the past ten seasons and served as Club Director for Roanoke Juniors. She is also the Tournament Director for the Shamrock Festival. Tamalyn is one of the very few area coaches with CAP Level 2 coaching certification.
Blair Trail has been the head coach at Roanoke College for the past 12 seasons and is currently 2nd in the ODAC in career wins by active coaches. Blair has lead her team to 3 ODAC Tournament Finals. As a player, Blair lead North Cross to a state championship before starting her college playing career at Division-I Radford University and ending her college days at Roanoke College where she set various school records for kills and digs.
Mike Wiegand Mike Wiegand has been a club coach for various open teams in the 16ís-18ís age group for the past 6 seasons and has attended multiple national tournaments during that time. He has also served as both head JV coach and assistant varsity coach at Cave Spring HS.
